Adrian High School Girls' Basketball Dominates Milan in District Playoff Opener

Instructions

The Adrian Maples girls' basketball team initiated their postseason journey with a resounding victory over Division 2 opponent Milan in the first round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 2 district tournament. The game, held at Dundee High School, saw Adrian assert its dominance across all facets of play, from rebounding to scoring and defense, culminating in a significant 65-35 win. This impressive performance underscored the team's readiness for the challenges ahead in the playoffs.

Adrian's offense ignited from the very start, spearheaded by senior Ella Salenbien, who impressively contributed nine of her game-high 18 points in the initial quarter alone. This early surge established a commanding lead for the Maples, as they outscored Milan 18-5 in the first period. The team maintained this offensive momentum into the second quarter, combining it with tenacious defense. Key contributions from Tatum Borton, who added nine points, and Rylee Lahring, with five points, further extended Adrian's lead to 37-13 by halftime. Any hopes Milan harbored for a second-half resurgence were quickly extinguished in the third quarter, as Adrian's unyielding defense limited Milan to just two points, while a collective scoring effort from Adrian's players, including six more points from Salenbien, widened the gap to 53-15. Although Milan displayed commendable resilience in the final quarter, outscoring Adrian 20-12, it was ultimately insufficient to overcome the Maples' substantial advantage.

Ella Salenbien's stellar performance was a highlight of the night, as she achieved another dominant double-double with 18 points and an astonishing 20 rebounds. This monumental effort also saw her surpass Rhonda (Moorehead) Hubbard's 1979 record for Adrian's single-season rebounding, bringing her season total to 273 and securing all three of Adrian's rebounding records. Other notable contributions came from Tatum Borton, who chipped in 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, and Rylee Lahring, who nearly achieved a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Emily Bladen of Milan also shone brightly despite the loss, scoring 24 points, including her 1000th career point. With this victory, Adrian advances to the MHSAA Division 2 District 52 semifinals, demonstrating the power of teamwork, dedication, and exceptional individual talent.

The path to success is often paved with determined effort and collaborative spirit. The Adrian girls' basketball team's decisive win showcases not only their athletic prowess but also the profound impact of perseverance and strategic play. Such achievements inspire not just the team but also the wider community, proving that with hard work and unity, remarkable milestones can be reached and overcome, fostering a sense of accomplishment and shared pride.
